Turbolinux 10 Server (10S) is a second-generation Linux operating system, incorporating the latest advances available in the 2.6 kernel, and aims to meet your mid-to-high-range server needs. 10S offers speed, security, as well as a suite of carefully selected open source and commercial software to offer users a portfolio of solutions. Automated maintenance updates are provided free of charge to users for five years - longer than most of the competition. 10S offers a powerful and flexible server environment that responds to the needs of the market in terms of functionality, support, as well as competitive pricing.

Main Components
kernel 2.6.8 / glibc 2.3.3 / XFree86 4.3.0 / gcc 3.3.3 / rpm 4.2.2

Speed, Security, and Solutions
The 2.6 kernel offers users unparallel speed and security by incorporating SELinux (Security-enhanced Linux) specifications. A variety of solutions is possible by using the variety of open source and commercial software products included in 10S.
These three "S’s” – speed, security, and solutions – are made possible by "Turbolinux 10 Server."
Second-Generation Linux Server
The industry is currently experiencing a transition from first-generation Linux offerings, which is characterized by the use of “edge servers” (dedicated web, mail, etc.), to second-generation Linux offerings that make use of open source DBMS and application servers to provide an robust and cost effective solution for your applications.

Web Application Development
A Java-based web application development environment is included.
- A variety of Java-related applications, most based on the Jakarta project, the world-renowned Java-based open source project, is shipped with 10S on the Java CD. These applications include the JavaVM environment, Struts, which is a framework for developing the Tomcat application server, JBoss, and JSP/Servlet, the Eclipse high-performance integrated development environment, PostgreSQL and MySQL, both of which include many test records in the DB. Thus, a full featured and robust development and operation environment for the creation of web applications is available for immediate use.
"Eclipse" integrated development environment
- Eclipse is a complete open-source integrated development environment (IDE) that provides enhanced functionality and easy operations equivalent to those of a commercial IDE.
Eclipse provides functions such as a source code complement function, a debug function for step execution, a build function, a test function, and a function for interacting with the version management system (CVS). Its structure is such that its functionality can be extended by using plug-ins.
Kernel 2.6 satisfies high-end requirements
Turbolinux 10 Server is based on kernel version 2.6, which satisfies most users’ high-end needs. 10S offers leading-edge functionality and services, such as the ability of constructing a development framework for web applications using various integrated Open Source Software (OSS). From developing a secure system, as represented by the secure OS SELinux, to edge server application enhancements, to a support framework (using carefully selected commercial solutions) 10S aims to meet your development needs.
- By employing the Native POSIX Threading Library (NPTL) by default, the processing speed of DBMS, Java software, and business applications using thread programming is dramatically improved. (Note: To ensure application compatibility, a method using conventional Linux Threads is also available.)
- With the Selectable I/O Scheduler, an I/O scheduler that matches the appropriate I/O properties can be selected.
- Security functions such as Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) is installed.
- By improving the scheduler, the performance of the SMP environment is improved.
- By supporting asynchronous I/O (AIO), the processing speed involving heavy disk I/O such as DBMS and file server processing is greatly improved.
- 10S has the ability to support up to a 32-CPU SMP machine with NUMA (non-uniform memory access).
- Large-scale servers are supported with built-in support for 64GB memory and disk capacities in the terabyte range.
File Systems
- Flexible disk volume management based on Logical Volume Manager 2 (LVM2).
- Flexible disk volume management is enabled. For example, multiple physical disks can be managed virtually as a single disk. Logical volume online resizing is also supported.
- Stored journaling file system, including: ext3, ReiserFS, JFS and XFS.
Support for POSIX Access Control Lists (ACL)
- POSIX ACL is a mechanism that enables standard UNIX-format permissions to be set using more flexible file access control. When ACL is used, permission to access a file can be set more flexibly for users and groups other than the owner of the file.
Security at the OS level
Employ a secure OS using SELinux
- Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) is a secure OS developed by the National Security Agency (NSA) based in the U.S. With SELinux, the privileges of the root user are eliminated at the Linux OS level, and access control is provided on a user-by-user/process-by-process basis, so that illegal system access is difficult and cracking can be prevented or, at least, minimized. By utilizing SELinux, Turbolinux 10 Server helps to enable the construction of a robust, secure system that protects itself from external attacks.
Secure OS construction/operation performance improvement by SELinux/Aid
-
SELinux/Aid consists of three tools for supporting the installation and operation of SELinux.
The first is a "security policy setting tool," which lets the user manage and set, through a GUI, a security policy that requires text-based settings. The second is a "security log analysis tool," which analyzes a SELinux audit log to display statistical information and extract information about invalid accesses. The third tool is a "security audit tool" that checks whether the security policy has been tampered with.
(Note) The SELinux/Aid tool was developed by Hitachi Software Engineering under contract for "Electronic Government Administration Information-Technology Activities" for the "Information-technology Promotion Agency (IPA)" and distributed by GPL.
Trend Micro’s ServerProtect for Linux Antivirus software
- A trial version of Trend Micro’s ServerProtect for Linux antivirus software for protecting file server information resources is provided with 10S. Real-time virus monitoring is enabled, so that the files shared by 10S file servers are protected, thus protecting in-house shared information from virus attacks. At the end of the 90-day trial period, 10S users can purchase ServerProtect for Linux at a discounted price from Turbolinux.
Turbolinux Tools
User-friendly "Mongoose" installer with precise hardware detection capability
- "Mongoose," developed with an emphasis on usability, offers a remarkably high level of functionality for automatically detecting hardware components and supports a wide variety and models of server hardware. To ease system administrator tasks, a variety of pre-selected functions, ranging from file system selection through package selection, to network and security level settings, is available.

Easy-to-use Turbolinux configuration tool, "TurboTools"
- TurboTools, a suite of configuration tools developed exclusively by Turbolinux, includes Turbo
Update, an application to facilitate and install security and bug fix updates. Turbo Update reduces the time-consuming and complex process associated with manual patch installation and streamlines the process.
Intelligent Security Updates
- The maintenance update service in 10S informs the user about security updates and is broken out into three categories: "Urgent”, “Important” and “Recommended”. Details and specification about each update is displayed as well as automatic or manual updates installation can be chosen. When a package update is available and needs to be applied, the "Turbo Alert" function is activated and displays the alert via an icon in the KDE dock.
Latest Hardware Support
- The following drivers are supported:
- Intel i915/925 chip set
- Serial ATA
- PCI Express
- InfiniBand
- FibreChannel
(Note: In the event updated versions of device or driver modules are released after product shipment, a driver disk will be made available (as an FD image) for downloading from Turbolinux’s FTP site. New devices can thus be supported by applying this driver disk (FD image) at the time of installation, or to the OS after installation.)
